Suggested Packing List for 10-14 day trip

 

Carry On:

(check weight limit – may be 10kg or less)

  1. Printout of the “Short Term Mission Manual”
  2. Names and address of team members and emergency contact numbers (in Manual)
  3. Names, addresses and contact numbers of contact in the field (in Manual)
  4. Flight information on team members
  5. Money for both personal (souvenirs, extra food) and team costs (40$ per day)
  6. Passport, tickets, drivers license, health insurance card and Travel insurance card, if purchased
  7. photocopy of passport
  8. Reading Material, glasses, Bible
  9. Extra Clothes – enough for a one nights stay
  10. Sun glasses and Hat
  11. Camera

Personal Check Through

– One bag – check weight limit – Usually 50kg
– consider taking one check through hiking backpack or something easier to carry into remote villages. 50 pound rolling suitcases are not easy the mountains of Haiti.

  1. Personal medical instruments (stethoscope, otoscope, ophthalmoscope)
  2. Boots/ Hiking Shoes – comfort is key
  3. Pair of sandals – for comfort when in villages
  4. Any snack items that you would like
  5. Clothes (consider dipping or spraying with permethrin for mosquito prevention)
    1. one set for each day – laundry facilities are not always available
    2. think cool – Haiti is Hot, bring clothing that is loose fitting, lightweight, and washable
    3. bring one nice outfit for church
  6. Nalgene, Canteen, Camelback or other water carrying container. (bring 1-2 Liters of capacity for hiking)
  7. Sun Block
  8. Insect Repellant (at least 30% DEET)
  9. Isopropyl alcohol gel for cleaning hands
  10. toiletries in ziplock bag
    • toilet paper
    •  soap
    • shampoo, etc.
  11. Camping Equipment – If traveling to remote areas
    • Sleeping bag
    • Sleeping mat for ground
    • Flash light/ Head lamp
    • Towel and washcloth
    • Pillow
    • Mosquito net, as needed

Team Check Through

“One bag for you-one bag for the team.”

– (prepare to be asked to carry medical supplies, lab equipment, or educational materials in one of you check-through bags.)

– Make sure you know what is in this bag before you check in at the airport. Airport security will question you about the contents of the bag and whether someone else gave it to you and what it contains. Know before you go.

IMPORTANT NOTE: don’t carry any knives or sharp instruments in carry ons, including nail scissors and small pocket knives. They will be removed and confiscated during security check. You can carry in you check through luggage. Also if you carry medical equipment, e.g. stethoscope, otoscope etc. in you carry on, keep it separate from you personal items and place in container for laptops before going through x-ray. It will keep security from going through your personal belongings.
